Prince Harry and Meghan Nuptials

Unfortunately for all the ladies hoping to become princesses one day, the “Bad Boy of Buckingham Palace,” Prince Harry, is soon to be off the market for good. Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Whales, 33, will be marrying American actress Rachel Meghan Markle, 36, on May 19 in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. This modern fairy-tale romance started back in July 2016, when a mutual friend set them up on a blind date, and just 16 months later Harry popped the question (and the bubbles of many hopeful female suitors).
The guest list for this much-anticipated wedding is a mystery to most apart from Markle’s parents and Harry’s immediate family, although there is a slight chance Prince Philip will not be in attendance, as he is still recovering from hip replacement surgery. One of the only confirmed nonfamilial attendees is Markle’s close friend and fellow actress, Priyanka Chopra.
“I’m super excited about her and her big day,” Chopra said in an interview with People Now. “It’s not just going to be life-changing for both of them, it’s life-changing for the world that needs to see strong women as icons, and I think Meghan has the potential to be that.”
Sadly, Kensington Palace has announced that the couple will not be inviting political leaders, and the guest list is reserved for people the couple has known for years, meaning the Obamas will not be at the event.
Additionally, several famous singers have been rumored to be performing at the wedding. Entertainment Tonight has reported that Britain’s favorite non-royal redhead, Ed Sheeran, has been asked to perform “a few songs” at the wedding, but Sheeran has not responded to requests for comment or confirmed the news. Mel B. also sparked rumors that the Spice Girls would be performing when she was asked if she had been invited to the wedding on the chat show The Real. While she said that an invitation had been extended to the five Spice Girls, exciting many hard-core fans, bandmate Mel C. quickly affirmed to social media that Mel B’s claim was not too serious.
However, the rumors that Elton John will be performing at the reception seem to be more substantial, as he was a good friend of Prince Harry’s mother Princess Diana, and has canceled two tour dates that clash with the wedding date on May 18 and 19. On the other hand, even if he is not formally invited, the singer lives close enough to the chapel to participate practically from his own home.
“I live on a hill, so I could just roll down there. It’s rolling distance,” the singer said referencing his Windsor home near St. George’s Chapel.
But how much will this wedding cost with such extravagant entertainment and accessories? According to Bridebook, the wedding is estimated to run $2,760,974, not to mention the cost of security, which is estimated to be around the security cost of William and Kate’s wedding — about $32 million. It might seem like the wedding is just a fun way to waste taxpayer money, and it would be if not for tourist opportunities and memorabilia from the event, which are estimated to bring in about $680 million. The previously mentioned memorabilia includes items like specialized china with the couple’s initials, mugs, paper dolls of the couple, coloring books, royal-wedding-themed clotted cream fudge, and a specialized royal wedding tea blend that utilizes American and English grown mint.
The wedding and included accouterments will no doubt be extravagant and over the top, but underneath the lavishness lies a more important meaning. The Windsors are no longer influential in the government, but rather a symbol of England and what it stands for, which is why the warm entry of Markle — a divorced American actress with a white father and an African-American mother — into the Royal family is so significant to the future of Britain. This wedding shows that Britain is slowly moving away from its strict traditions, which not only displays to the world a more inclusive and progressive monarchy, but also gives hope to millions of biracial girls that their fairy-tale dream can one day become a reality.
