Recently the popular app Snapchat has been under fire for an offensive and tone deaf advertisement that appeared on their platform. The ad was for a mobile game, “Would You Rather?,”and it featured a question asking “Would you rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown?” This advertisement angered many users, because Chris Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 for beating Rihanna while they were dating. Rihanna issued a statement via Instagram.
“Now SNAPCHAT, I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!” Rihanna said “I’d love to call it ignorance but I know you ain’t that dumb. You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to Domestic Violence victims and made a joke of it.”
Since the statement, Snapchat’s stock has dropped nearly 4%, resulting in nearly $800 million loss from Snapchat’s market value, and Rihanna is only the latest celebrity blasting the app.
Kylie Jenner, a few weeks before Rihanna’s statement, tweeted about her displeasure with the app’s new update.
“Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad” Jenner said on twitter.
This tweet preceded Snapchat’s 6% drop, resulting in a $1.3 billion loss of the company’s market value.
All these recent bad headlines and the loss of money leaves a lingering question: will Snapchat be able to stay afloat? Snapchat has already recently announced the layoff of 120 engineers. Furthermore, with many users already unhappy with the new design, one wonders how many more losses Snapchat can take before the app ceases to exist.
