After a year with interim principal Stephanie Cannon, South recently welcomed Andy Dey as the principal for the 2015-2016 school year. He was selected by a hiring committee comprised of South staff members, school district board members, and the superintendent this past March.
Though he may be new to the school as a principal, Dey is quite familiar with the South community.
“I did my student teaching at South Eugene many years ago,” he said.
Prior to returning to Eugene, Dey served as the Director of K–12 Curriculum and Professional Development at the International School Nido de
Aguilas in Chile for five years. He officially began his work at South on July 5.
Dey said that his experience here so far has been positive.
“Students are generally happy, parents are very involved, and the faculty is very committed,” Dey said. “One of my favorite aspects of the school is the curiosity and ambition of the students.”
Being a principal can be a high-stress job. It entails the management of major administrative tasks, as well as staying in constant communication with administration, students, and parents.
“It’s not an easy job,” Dey said, “but is certainly one I enjoy coming to on a daily basis.”
