After several phenomenal seasons, the men’s varsity soccer team started this season off with a few more losses than expected. The program currently holds a win-loss-tie record of 3-2-3, following their 1-0 victory over Sheldon in the popular Emerald Derby game on Sept. 23. Team Captain George Dickerson scored the game-winning goal.
“We had a really big crowd for the Sheldon game, it was sick. Usually a lot of people come out for the games and we get a lot of support,” senior George Dickerson said.
The Axemen are currently coached by Jurgün Ruckaberle, who took over the men’s soccer program in 2007.
“They work for each other and are committed to the goals in each practice,” he said. Ruckaberle has high hopes of improving the soccer program this season. “So far the goals have only come from a few players. We need to spread the wealth a bit.”
The team has worked hard on and off the field this season to implement training ideas they have learned in practice.
“We’ve played the hardest teams that we’re going to play already, so we should win out for the rest of the season,” Dickerson said.
The team will have to defend their win against local rival Sheldon High School one more time this season. However, the boys are mostly anticipating their upcoming game against Grants Pass, who knocked the Axemen out of the state playoffs last year.
