South Eugene High School recently welcomed new band teacher Doug Doerfert. Doerfert, who previously taught at Cal Young Middle School, was drawn to South because of its rich legacy in performing arts.
“I hope to continue South’s tradition of excellence in not only performance, but also music education,” Doerfert said.
A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Doerfert grew up around music and participated in his high school band. He hopes to “help people do the best they can.”
When asked about his personal goals for the year, Doerfert said, “I plan to teach until my head falls off.”
Orchestra, taught by Gale Fizman, is also adjusting to new changes as it goes from a zero period class that meets three times per week to a first period class.
“I like that I’m seeing the kids every day. But with a five period day, it really tightens up the schedule so I’ve lost some kids,” Fizman said.
String ensemble also changed its schedule, going from meeting three times a week to meeting four times a week.
With the help of these changes, these new and returning teachers hope to create a stronger program not only at South, but also around the district.
